How do public bodies use GIS?

Public bodies use GIS to link records to physical locations: property parcels for tax assessment, infrastructure assets for maintenance, ward boundaries for routing, and complaints mapped to identify clusters. It turns lists into a spatial picture that supports planning and reconciliation.

One base map, many departments

The common pattern is several departments each holding their own partial spatial data, none quite agreeing. Property tax has one set of parcels, water supply has another, roads has a third. Reconciling them is where most of the value in a GIS programme actually sits.

A shared authoritative base layer with departmental data on top prevents that divergence recurring. It also makes reconciliation exercises possible — comparing the tax register against what is visibly built is one of the highest-return uses of GIS in municipal work.
