What does an IoT deployment involve?

An IoT deployment covers selecting sensors suited to the environment, choosing connectivity that works at the site, building ingestion and storage for the data stream, and delivering dashboards and alerts. The engineering difficulty is usually in the physical environment and connectivity rather than the software.

The site is harsher than the spec sheet

Sensors that perform well in a lab fail on a construction site in monsoon, in a cold store, or on a vehicle vibrating for eight hours a day. Connectivity assumed in planning turns out not to exist in the basement where the meter is. Batteries rated for two years last eight months at forty-five degrees.

So we pilot in the worst location first, not the convenient one. A deployment validated in the easy conditions and rolled out at scale is how organisations end up with a hundred sensors reporting nothing.

What happens when connectivity drops?

Devices should buffer locally and sync when the connection returns, and the platform should alert on a device going silent rather than assuming no data means no problem. Both are design requirements we set from the start.

Who maintains the devices?

Someone must, and it is the most commonly overlooked cost. Batteries fail, devices are damaged, firmware needs updating. We include a maintenance plan with realistic effort estimates rather than presenting deployment as a one-off.
