Why use blockchain for supply chain traceability?

Supply chains span organisations that compete and do not want a rival hosting the shared record. Blockchain provides a record no single party controls or can retrospectively alter, which is what makes provenance claims credible to regulators and end customers rather than merely asserted.

Garbage in is still the hard problem

Blockchain guarantees a record was not altered after it was written. It cannot guarantee the record was true when written. If someone scans a batch dishonestly at origin, you have an immutable record of a lie — and it is important to be clear-eyed about this before investing.

Serious deployments therefore pair the ledger with data capture that is hard to falsify: IoT sensors, tamper-evident packaging, GPS at handover, sampling audits. The blockchain layer handles the multi-party trust; the capture layer handles input integrity. Both are needed.

Questions we get about this

Do all our suppliers need to participate?

For a full chain claim, yes, which is the practical barrier. Most programmes start with a high-value product line and a willing subset of partners, prove the value, then extend. A partial chain still supports narrower claims honestly described.

Can competitors see our data?

Not by default. Permissioned chains with channel separation mean parties see only the transactions they are party to, while the integrity guarantee still holds across the chain. Designing this visibility model is a major part of the work.
