What is Model Context Protocol?

The open standard that lets AI tools reach your systems through one governed interface instead of many bespoke integrations.

What is Model Context Protocol?

Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is an open standard defining how AI assistants connect to external data and tools. Instead of building a separate integration for every AI product you adopt, you build one MCP server and any compatible assistant can use it within permissions you set.

The problem it solves

Every AI tool a company adopts wants access to the same systems — the CRM, the document store, the ticketing system. Built one at a time, that becomes a tangle of bespoke integrations with inconsistent permissions and no audit trail, and it has to be rebuilt when you switch assistants.

MCP standardises the interface so access is defined and governed in one place.

Why it matters for governance

  • Every tool the AI can use is explicitly declared, not implied by an API key.
  • Permissions are least-privilege by default.
  • Destructive actions can require confirmation.
  • Every call is logged against an identity, which is what makes an audit possible.

Talk it through before you commit

A discovery call is a working session on your constraint, not a sales pitch.
